Patients vs Staff

Decked out in her Merry Christmas tee and Jingle Bells collar, Cora and I arrived a little later than usual today at the Mayo.  Our patient areas were beginning to fill with people for treatment in either radiation or chemo.  Something was different though.  Within minutes of our arrival,  staff personal began to emerge one by one to voice their gratefulness for Cora's presence.  The look of a stressful morning on their faces just melted away as Cora sat patiently accepting hug after hug.  As we walked the hallway back to the patient area, Cora musically pranced by each doorway with her jingle bells announcing her presence to those still working at their desks.  Smiling faces looked up from their computers as they shared a welcome break with us.  This Caring Canine was not particular to whom she was bringing a little happiness - she just knew that they needed some TLC.  This is a high-stress area to work in and I'm sure that it takes a great deal of both physical and mental stamina.  The team effort there is enormous, but every team member has to come to the sidelines for a short timeout.  It's great that Cora, as a Caring Canine, can be on the sidelines to bring just a few moments of laughter.  Clearly, it revitalizes their spirits.  I shared with them a picture of Cora with Santa.  It now hangs in the area where team members sit for hours mapping out a treatment plan for the patients. "It will make me smile" our friend voiced.  One dog, brings so many smiles now.  It's contagious!

Team Work!

Cora and I had a busy 2 days at Mayo this week.  It's always brings a smile to my face when I see the positive reception that is given to us by the patients and their families.  Today brought not only that big smile, but also, filled my heart with pride.  A gentleman that was waiting for his radiation treatment had several questions about therapy dogs and how they functioned in the medical setting.  After several minutes of telling him about the training involved and how we volunteer our time with the dogs, he looked down at Cora who was stretched out across his feet and said, "You are heroes, to be sharing in our moment of weakness"!   Wow, I never would have imagined anyone calling us a hero.  Looking up the true definition, it states, "a person who, in the opinion of others, has heroic qualities or has performed a heroic act".   Strange thing is that I look at these patients and draw strength from them.  They stare cancer in the face, ...

New Horizons!

Cora and I spent our last day volunteering at Mayo in June.  We will miss our friends, but our journey will continue bringing smiles and comfort in Florida.  I've been searching for our "niche" here and we will soon be back working as a therapy dog team.  During the move I completed my Evaluator status with Pet Partners and am now studying for my Instructor license.  Hope to have all that done in about 6 weeks.  That way I can teach people how they can join this special force of animal healers!  More to come soon!
